Before applying to court for most family matters, you are legally required to attend a MIAM.
What is a MIAM?
A Mediation Information and Assessment Meeting (MIAM) is a short, confidential meeting with a qualified mediator. It's your opportunity to find out more about family mediation and whether it could help resolve your dispute without going to court.
Since April 2014, attending a MIAM has been a legal requirement before making most applications to the family court. The mediator will sign your court form (FM1) to confirm you have attended.
Who needs a MIAM?
You are required to attend a MIAM before applying to court for:
- Child arrangements orders (where children live, contact arrangements)
- Financial orders (division of assets, property, pensions)
- Prohibited steps orders
- Specific issue orders
What happens at a MIAM?

Introduction
Your mediator will explain the mediation process, what to expect, and answer any questions you have.

Your situation
You'll have the chance to explain your circumstances and the issues you need to resolve.

Assessment
The mediator will assess whether mediation is suitable and safe for your situation.

Next steps
If mediation is suitable, you'll discuss how to proceed. If not, the mediator will sign your FM1 court form.
Are there exemptions?
There are limited exemptions — for example, in cases involving domestic abuse, child protection concerns, or urgent matters. Your mediator will discuss whether any exemptions apply to your situation.

- Previous MIAM attendance within 4 months
Practical information
A MIAM typically lasts around 45–60 minutes.
MIAMs can be held in person or online via video call.
You and the other party attend separately — you do not need to be in the same room.
The cost of a MIAM is £150 per person including VAT. Government vouchers may be available to cover costs.
